HISTORY

Devotion is a feeling which gives peace and calmness to the mind and soul of the devotees. In our pain and challenges of life we seek help from the supreme power. When we submit our worries and problems in the foot of that power, we are unknowingly allowing the power of that lord to overflow into our life.

The history of the temple dates back to a hundred years. According to Hindu mythology. According to Hindu mythology, a brahmin named Panjanelloor Bhattathiripad lived in the northern side of Kerala. He is a hardcore devotee of Lord Shiva, who has indepth knowledge in Upanishad and Vedas. He used to travel every year to Kottiyoor Shiva temple to seek his blessings. But he has to travel long distance crossing mountains, forest and rivers to reach there. During all these journeys, he used to get threats from robbers and his enemy Mattapilly Namboodiri who is a devotee of Bhadrakali. Mattapilly used his powers to do bad deeds and to harm others. Mattapilly was very rude towards women in that area including girls in the home of Panchanelloor Bhattathiripad. The people in that area presented their complaints about Mattapilly and robbers attacking the paddy fields to Bhattathiripad. Bhattathiripad decided to find a solution for the problems by intensely praying to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva heard his prayer and answers that he alone cannot kill Mattapilly as he is bhadrakali devotee. He needs the help of Lord Vishnu to fulfill his prayer. Lord Shiva said not to worry and when the right time comes everything will happen as per his prayer.

In order to execute the promise to Panchanelloor Bhattathiripad , Lord Shiva takes the form of a Kattalan along with his followers. The robbers were expelled from the forest by them. While he was roaming in the forest he sees a woman bathing in the river. He fell in love with the forest girl and ask her to spend time with him by revealing his identity. The girl was Koolivaga who is a devotee of Parvathy Devi, wife of Lord Shiva. Realising that the kattalan was Lord Shiva Koolivaga was afraid and prays to Parvathy Devi. Parvathy Devi answers her prayer and asks her to agree to Lord Shiva. Meanwhile Parvathy Devi takes the form of Koolivaga with the help of Lord Vishnu’s maya, spends time with Lord Shiva and becomes pregnant. With the help of Lord Vishnu’s maya, Parvathy Devi transfers her pregnancy to Koolivaga and asks her to take care of the baby till he reaches the age to study Vedas and Upanishads and other skills. Koolivaga takes utmost care to upbring the child in the forest and named him as Chathan. When the proper time came, she returns the child to Lord Parvathy in Kailasam. He was given the name VIshnumaya in Kailasam by Lord Shiva and Parvathy Devi as he was born with the help of maya of Lord Vishnu. Vishnumaya mastered Vedas, mantras and various skills in a very short period of time. After completing his studies in Kailasam Lord Shiva blessed him to have his Mahisham as his vehicle and Karinguttichathan his former helper and friend with a white bull as vehicle and 390 helpers to accompany him to earth to help the people of Earth.

Vishnumaya Chathan swamy along with his followers reaches the home of Bhattathiripad and assures him to solve the problems of that area like the attack of the robbers and evil practises of Mattapilly. The encounter with Mattapilly was a bit difficult as Vishnumaya Chathan Swamy has to face Bhadrakali. When Bhadrakali realized that Vishnumaya Chathan swamy was not an ordinary person and is son of both Shiva and Vishnu, she withdrawn her encounter resulting in defeat of Mattapilly. Bhadrakali then blesses Vishnumaya swamy that she will also be there where Vishnumaya resides to bless the devotees. When his purpose of life with Bhatathiripad was accomplished Vishnumaya Chathan swamy decide to return. The people of that area requested swamy to stay with them and bless them. Vishnumaya swamynagreed to the wishes of his devotees and he made it clear to the devotees that his power should never be used for bad deeds. Later Vishnumaya chathan swamy resides with the devotees and a helper of Thriprayar Lord Srirama
